1 Basics

What are Northern Lights and how do they arise? Where can you see them? What intensity, colour and shape can they have? In this chapter, you will find all the basic knowledge about this fascinating celestial phenomenon.

2 Travel planning

Which countries are suitable for Northern Lights and how cold is it there? What else would you need to know?

3 Northern Light and weather forecast

When you decide on the location and time of travel for your Northern Lights tour, there’s already a certain level of expectation and understanding for what the weather would potentially be like in that region. I do still recommend checking the short term weather forecast every day of your trip though. In the following pages, I will introduce some useful tools.

4 Photograph Northern Lights

Some of the biggest challenges of Northern Lights photography are composition, focus (night conditions), and climate. In this section I will touch upon these challenges and explain the proper camera settings that will help you overcome these obstacles.

5 Packing list for the photographer

You will spend a fair amount of time outdoors while chasing the Northern Lights. It is important to dress appropriately for the occasion. Being outside in the Arctic Circle after dark for extended periods of time is no walk in the park. Not only will you need to prepare for the climate, your photography equipment must also be suitable to the low temperatures you’ll be using them in.

6 Example: Lofoten

Using the Lofoten Islands as the destination, I would like to show you what an exemplary travel plan for a Northern Lights chase could look like. It’s all about the logistics and photo opportunities around the clock as there is plenty of time left between the nights which needs to be filled.

7 Checklist for printing

All facts summarized in one handy checklist for your convenience! Just print and go!

Suitable for beginners and
professionals

Practical tips and experiences are given, so that a quick familiarisation with the topic of northern light hunting is possible. The basics of photography and the operation of the camera in manual mode are assumed. This photo guide does not replace a camera manual, but rather serves to convey specific knowledge in the field of northern light photography.
